One of the best things about being a freelancer is the fact that you can explore different things – different mediums, different skillsets and different clients.
I have been working for myself for about three years now – doing a combination of journalism, editing, content creation and project management. It's been an amazing journey and one that I keep learning from.
So many new opportunities have been arriving at my door. And I love being my own boss and being in charge of my own destiny.
Technology changes so fast, trends come and go and new projects continue to crop up that it all seems like one huge and exciting world out there. I enjoy the excitement of exploring new things – from the huge growth in audio, to facilitating photo shoots, and working in new industries. So much to be a part of!
This year alone, I have presented a workshop with Rachel's List, started a podcast (with the same Rachel) and am just a few weeks away from presenting my first TedX talk, which is all about the joy of being your own boss and the gig economy.
I have found that diversity of work is a big plus when you own your own business. It spreads your risk and allows you to continue to grow as a writer and business owner. I often learn something from one project and apply it to my next, even if the topics are wildly different.
While most of my current content work is in my chosen niche of interiors and design, I have also edited recipes (and just wrapped editing a third cookbook this year), written about pets for the Australian Veterinary Association and created website content for clients ranging from builders to kitchen companies and even the food safety industry.
Looking for an agile collaborator? Want a diversity of skills? Want to take your business into directions you didn't know existed? Talk to me. Magic happens when we think differently.
